Daughters Of Darkness (Harry Kümel, 1971)

Daughters Of Darkness is one of those films that had everything they needed to be a great B movie but finally they are a big failure. There are things and elements in the movie that work and they have some power but the general image of the movie is a film that doesn't know where to go and what is it. It has some fantasizing nudity images but these are not enough to hold a movie that trembles and falls in the pit of getting serious without a reason. It gets tedious and boring and it lacks the vigour that a film like that should have. It's humourless, it's predictable and it gets totally pointless after some point. The problem of the film is that it gets really static from the beginning, when there should be some kind of action, there are scenes that repeat themselves in a movie that had everything and it threw them away. The basic story is quite interesting but the plot is totally uninteresting. You need something more than a mansion and two vampires to make a movie if you are not Jess Franco who could do a movie even with one woman and a car. This movie over here lacks the basic things that you need from a film. Suspense and interest. It is like a tea that was left on the table all night and now its undrinkable. The truth though is that if you cut the film to scenes, there are some scenes that have imagination and atmosphere, but that element is not enough to levitate the film from the absolute mediocre. And sometimes the mediocre movies tend to be worse than big craps because they left you with nothing. You forget them the moment you see them.

Daughters Of Darkness try to win the audience with its mysterious atmosphere that the truth is that it works. The film is atmospheric. But there are other things, things necessary in a movie that have serious problem. A film with such a generic plot and boring agenda could never made it to be a good movie. Somewhere in the middle you are even tired from the nudity scenes a thing that is highly difficult to happen. Truth is that nudity without plot is like trying to fill a broken bucket. The only one who can made great films without a plot was Jess Franco but he is the big exception. Otherwise you need a story that would have some twists, some events that could make the viewer find an interest to the movie. Daughters Of Darkness stay a film that gave everything to the looks and left nothing for the actual story. Daughters Of Darkness is a movie that is conceived like a cult movie, but made like a crap film.
