Thriller - A Cruel Picture (Alex Fridolinski, 1973)

Everybody who hasn't seen that movie, wonders what is like, since it became "popular" as it was one of the movies that inspired Quentin to make his Kill Bill movies. It's really funny to see that when Quentin gave the movie to Daryl Hannah she answered to him, "Quentin, did you give me a porno movie?" And now the questions that derive from all this... "gossip" is whether the movie is worthy and if it is really a porno movie? As far as the porno is concerned, well, no it's not a porno movie in the literal sense. Yes it is a highly explicit movie, with lots of nudity and sex, but it's not a porno movie, it's an exploitation rape-and-revenge film. Now in the other part of the question, if that film is worthy, well the answer is not that clear and easy. Thriller is a movie with lots of problems. It's certainly tedious at many points and there is also a sense of amateurism in the movie. But on the other hand there is definitely something totally depravingly exciting about the film. It's so shamelessly sick that movie and so unbelievably... cruel that it becomes a very enjoyable (in a distorted way) and daring movie.
Swedish director Bo Arne Vibenius wrote and directed under the pseudonym Alex Fridolinski, a movie that really tests you and provokes you in many ways. It's not only the actual violence and the sex scenes that are daring and controversial, it's also that "emptiness" of the movie, that... lethargic tone of the film where the protagonist is a traumatized mute girl that gets messed up in the most unbelievable story of exploitation and severe abuse. I mean you really need a big stomach in order to sustain that movie. It's transgressive and it's definitely a living hell for all kind of conservatives and prudes out there. As far as my experience with the film, I can say that I liked it and consider it a very interesting movie, but it's not a movie that I will choose easily to watch on a random night. It's a really painful experience, in its own distinctive way, that film. It's morally corrupt in any way you can imagine. And that of course is a good element, but together with everything else comes also a genuine sickness and a "profound" torture. Whatever the case, Thriller is a movie that it's an exciting story even only for the fact that this movie really exists.
