Vampyros Lesbos (Jess Franco, 1971)

Deeply erotic and mysteriously sensual is this Jess Franco creation that has one of the best opening scenes that you can find in a movie. With an eerie atmosphere and a mystifying touch Vampyros Lesbos take the spectator by the hand and it shows him another, fantasy world that lies among us and it's covered with mystery and the sensual touch of a female vampire. Jess Franco is known for how much he loved women and this time tells a lesbian erotic story that touches deeply the audience and makes the movie to walk among the most erotic films that you can find in genre films. Another thing that Jess Franco always did was taking genres and transforming them to erotic poems. The exploiation element together with the erotic touch of the director make a combination in Vampyros Lesbos that is like watching a movie that was made by the erotic Gods. There is so much eroticism and sensuality in that movie that you can barely take it. There is so much pathos in that film that is like is dripping erotic fluids. Vampyros Lesbos is a movie that astonishes the viewer with its bold and at the same time gentle touch that make the movie a vulgar poem, a poetic blasphemy that came here to bewitch the audience and take them to a place where the bodies and the souls are connected in some strange, mysterious way.
Vampyros Lesbos is the example where creativity found its number one spokesman and we are having a movie that is so idiosyncratic that can easily call itself and art erotic movie. Because the thing that is quite obvious is that Jess Franco was making art films. The fact that all of his movies are B movies doesn't change the fact that are deeply artistic and idiosyncratic creations that couldn't have been made by anyone else. Jess Franco's cinema resembles no other cinema. It's unique and it stays an expression that only this director had the courage and the heart to perform. In Vampyros Lesbos we see that creativity coming straight at us, we sense that creativity from scene number one till the bitter end. And that form of expression, that wild emotional ride that the film offers is the proof that Jess Franco was a huge filmmaker, a filmmaker most underrated and wrongly trashed. Vampyros Lesbos stays one of his biggest creations, one of his greatest films, a moment where expression and form found their number one spokesman. Vampyros Lesbos is a movie that touches you deeply and for that you love to watch it and get inside its own unique and strange world.
